It already started. Without warning, I found the apartment filled with Christmas ornaments and, most notably, a Christmas tree, or seasonal monochromatic ornamented cone-shaped display, if you prefer to call it that.
It was put up on Sunday morning by my mother and my sister. As in previous years, I missed the chance to help out, this time because I slept in, something that will continue to happen until January (at least).
Comparing the current tree with the one from last year, little seems to have changed. Once again, it is placed in the balcony so the dogs won’t get to it and see it as a colorful toilet. The presents will probably be placed in my nephew’s playpen, just like the last time.
Unlike last year, where I settled for a full shot of the tree, I’ve got close-ups!
To “decorate” the base of it, the strange-eyed bunch returns, arranged in a slightly different way, so as to not bore the camera.
In other news, I’ve continued to delete things from the computer’s hard drive. In one week, I got rid of nearly 10 GB of various things, most of which are animated short films and Blender-related videos that I’ve downloaded over the years. They’re all nice to watch, but they have no use just sitting on the hard drive gathering e-dust.
As much as I like watching Chris Landreth’s Oscar-winning short, Ryan (about Ryan Larkin’s short-lived success as an animator), student work from Gobelins and Supinfocom and old Blender Conference videos, among various other things, the space can be better used, and I’d like to hoard as little as possible, both in the computer and outside of it. I’m watching them all before pressing Delete, in case I learn something new or become inspired. The latter hasn’t happened yet, but here’s hoping …
Aside from the above, nothing much is going on. I cleaned up a bit more last week, asked a classmate to let me know of any free (or cheap) conference or talk that might give me a few of the remaining hours for college, and I’ve taken up drinking a mug of green tea every day, to see if that does anything for my lousy health. There seems to be a bit of improvement from last week, but I don’t know whether it’s the tea or not.
Outside my personal life, this country isn’t getting any better. Changes have been made in the Constitution to benefit those with deep pockets at the expense of those with no pockets, women still have no say on whether they want to keep an unwanted pregnancy –while those who voted to keep this can afford to get abortions performed elsewhere–, the definition of marriage was changed to a union strictly between a man and a woman, destroying the possibility of marriage equality in the near future. Too much influence from the church. To top all that, public access to rivers and beaches might become restricted. Something about the right of private property.
People have been protesting the changes (especially that last one about the beaches), and the motto Esa no es mi Constitución (lit. “That’s not my Constitution”) has been turning up everywhere, from graffiti to stickers. The protesting has died down in the last couple of weeks, though, and the popular news of the week is the murder of Miky Bretón, creator and producer of what was possibly the only drama show currently on Dominican television, Relatos (“Tales”), and probably one of the longest-running. It didn’t follow a set storyline, but instead presented various short stories about crime, rape, drug abuse and things like that, taking place here. Sure, I didn’t watch it, but the man was trying. Bleak future for scripted television here, when the ones who make it happen get, you know … murdered.
Yikes, this post became depressing. The above two paragraphs are nothing like the ones before. I better stop now, before it turns into something that’s just as sad as the local headline news. I should stop bothering to read those.
To end this on a better note, uh … Santa says hi.

X-Mas, early!! I’m not even gonna lie, the tree is hilarious. Looks pretty at lite up though, I really like the bird and tree ornament. You’alls x-mas tree oozes uniqueness and homeyness.
Love the Gobelins site, can’t wait to see your student work :) Really sad all the stuff going on in DR. I seriously couldn’t imagine people literally changing the our constitution to suite politician’s wants. Good thing is that people are protesting. And you just tell those churchies that god “owns” rivers and beaches therefore it’s contradictory to restrict access lol
Not offended by the tree thing, because I didn’t decorate it :P
I guess I could adapt a few bible quotes for the protest. People do that all the time!
Wait, so you’re mom and sister will get offended, omg delete my comment before they see it!! btw, you could just “sound” like you’re quoting the bible, I do it all the time. Just make up a sentence and include the words “thou”, “shalt”, “openeth”, “keepth”…etc,.
Hello there. I’ve been ill – again. This time I had a leftover from childhood chickenpox that laid in wait in my nerve endings and manifested as Shingles. It was nasty and painful but is just about gone now.
I’m surprised to see a Christmas tree up so early. The Americans have yet to celebrate their Thanksgiving and it was Halloween last Saturday night. I had a great Halloween. I helped out at a children’s party on Saturday afternoon and nearly split my sides laughing at the outfits the toddlers and their dogs were wearing. They were beyond cute and their pets were so long suffering. One that particulalry drew a lot of attention was ghost dog. He was a black lab whose fur had been baby oiled and then had flour sifted over it. He had a fluorescent green lead and collar and little bands of the same stuff around each of his legs. When the lights went out he was definitely a ghostly apparition provided you didn’t get close enough to him to be licked to death.
In the evening my partner and I were chaperons at a teen party and that featured deafening music, that is if you can call non-stop thumping of a boom box and swearing rap style ghetto slang blah, blah, blah music. It gave me a headache but I had anticipated it would so I took 2 Motrin an soldiered on. The costumes were predictable. The nubile young women dressed in various sluttish outfits and guys had tried to do as little dressing up as possible.
I discovered that my new dog who I have had since the end of August and who has been raised with big dogs who were all taught not to bark. What a boon after owning a pack of chihuahuas! He barks a bit only when cars drive up and stops immediately when told – stop! No sooner had I celebrated that than I noticed something else about him. I sing a lot and he was definitely listening and liking it and throwing back his head like he was about to howl. Strange sounds warbled from his throat as he tried to mimic the tone of my voice. I was amazed. I tried coyote howling at him to see if he would mimic that – no go. He just couldn’t do it although he gave it a try or too. I have never owned a dog that did not know how to howl like a coyote.
Time passed and I went on singing as I usually do. Well last week he threw his head and warbled all the way through a song with me. He had such an earnest look on his face I could not laugh, even though it was super funny. My husband heard him and hid in another room for the first week of our duet singing. Well, this week my little dog who looks like a tiny lion is full of self confidence. It’s funny to hear him go for it but we have been cautious not to laugh and only to praise him. He’s a budding canine Pavaroti! No kidding.
All my best to you,
TiTi
Baby oil and flour? My goodness, those poor dogs. Mine would kill me if I even attempted to disguise them. Heck, only two of the four will let us put the collars on them.
I need to figure out how to get the dogs to bark less, like yours. The chihuahua’s average lifespan tells that there is still plenty of barking headed our way. They do get together every so often to howl, and they’ll start howling if we make them.
I’m generally not a fan of parties, so I probably wouldn’t even offer to chaperon for something like that. I am glad that you had a great time, regardless of the noise and all the craziness from kids these days.
While we don’t have Halloween (though some have adopted it), we’ve got a great carnival season on February, so that’s our share of dressing up!
Cool blog. I didn’t realize you were a photographer…or perhaps I had forgotten?
Anyway, great work :)
Merry Christmas! I like your decors. So nice and perfect!
